A DRUG user caught smuggling heroin to a friend in prison was jailed for four years.

Jason Green hid more than two grams of the drug on his body when he went to visit Darren Hulson in Dovegate prison, near Uttoxeter.

He was detained during the check-in procedure at the jail on December 30, searched and arrested after the heroin was found.

Ian Pinkney, prosecuting, said the heroin could have been split into 10 wraps, which on the streets would have sold for £10 each.

Green, aged 40, of Berdmore Street, Fenton, admitted possessing heroin with intent to supply. Stafford Crown Court heard that among his previous convictions, in 1993 he had been jailed for 12 years for drugs offences.

Recorder Robin Mairs told him: "You know better than most how much more valuable heroin is behind prison walls than on the street."

Nick Tatlow, defending, said: "He knows all about the dangers of heroin, because his life has been blighted by it. He knows it was wrong, taking drugs in to prison, he very foolishly took a chance."

“Oh the silly boy, taking drugs into a prison. I don't suppose for one minute he knew he was doing wrong. I won't be too harsh with my comments because I will only get replies about how drugs never affect my children/granchildren. I can speak from experience that most drug addicts don't want the bother of getting clean. Everyone should have one chance of help, I agree with that. My life was once horrific due to a drug addict, that is why I appear so hard.”
