THE Good Garage scheme is designed to raise standards in the service and repair industry and give motorists peace of mind that their car is in safe hands.

The scheme was launched in 2006 to combat a general perception that the motor trade does not offer value for money and is not always to be trusted.

It requires that its members, which now number more than 3,000, adhere to a strict Code of Conduct and offer a 50-point Industry Standard Service.

Garages joining the scheme have to stick to a strict Code of Conduct and pledge to have their customers' best interests at heart. They must agree what work needs doing with their customers before it is carried out, work to an industry-standard checklist, supply each customer with a feedback card allowing them to give their views on service directly to the Good Garage Scheme, which operates a stringent complaints procedure and they are subject to regular mystery shopper-style audits and face expulsion if they break the Code of Conduct.

Since its launch the initiative has gone from strength to strength. Now, its members carry out an average of almost 68,000 services a month, generating more than 10,000 consumer feedback cards giving the garages a valuable insight into their performance as seen through the eyes of the customer.

The Good Garage Scheme takes a strong line with its members and has removed 700 garages from the scheme. What guarantees do you have? Help is at hand if you feel you need further explanation of what went on during your car's service and there is a formal complaints procedure if you feel things need to be taken further.

The Good Garage Scheme monitors customer feedback and receives as many as 10,000 feedback cards per month which provide extremely valuable testimonials from customers as well as highlighting any concerns they have which the scheme's monitors will take up directly with the garage involved.

The feedbacks are posted on the Good Garage Scheme website to help motorists choose a suitable garage in the future.

In addition, it offers to liaise with motorists who may have issues with member garages so that these are resolved.

Because the standards are so high and rigorously enforced, it means that if your vehicle is new enough to still be within the manufacturer's warranty it can be serviced by a Good Garage Scheme member without invalidating the warranty conditions.
