Transplant facts

The average waiting time for a kidney transplant is two and a half to three years.

Living donor kidney transplants are increasing – 589 in 2005-2006, 690 in 2006-2007 and 829 in 2007-2008 – and now represent more than one in three of all kidney transplants.

The survival of transplants from living donors is significantly better.

The live donation process

The donor goes through blood and urine tests, scans and other investigations.

These tests will take several weeks and will normally involve a minimum of six visits to hospital. Consultations are then undertaken with a kidney doctor, transplant co-ordinator, surgeons and a counsellor.

Medical history is obtained from the donor's GP.

Following the operation, it is expected the donor will remain in hospital for three to five days.

The whole process can take up to a year.

Donors will be invited to a follow-up clinic four to six weeks after the operation, and once a year thereafter.

Experts recommend donors should plan to be off work for up to three months following the operation. They may not be able to drive for four to six weeks.
