'I think I have stabbed somebody': Murder accused told pals after Bentilee stabbing

A COUPLE have told a court how a friend confided in them that he had killed a man outside a house party.

Lee Shaw spoke to his former workmate Robert Shaughnessy on the evening of May 13 last year and told him he 'had killed somebody'.

Shaw, aged 34, of Community Drive, Smallthorne, is on trial at Stafford Crown Court charged with murdering Dalbagh Singh Malhi in Bentilee earlier the same day.

He admits killing Mr Malhi but denies murder, saying he acted in self-defence.

Yesterday Mr Shaughnessy told the jury Shaw contacted him and asked if he had heard about 'that thing' in Bentilee. Mr Shaughnessy, who told Shaw he had not seen the news that day, said the defendant said he had been to a party and killed somebody.

He said: "Scouse (Shaw) said, 'I think I have stabbed somebody and he has died in hospital'.

"He kept repeating himself, 'I have killed him, I have killed him'."

Mr Shaughnessy told Shaw to hand himself in but he said he would do it in the morning.

The witness and his wife, Melanie, went to meet Shaw in Northwood before taking him to their Ball Green home.

Mr Shaughnessy said: "He said he had been to a party and two lads walked past, badgering the girls.

"He said he heard shouting and went out of the house to see what was going on.

He said, 'I do not want any trouble mate', to those couple of lads. He tried to get the girls back in the house.

"One of the lads went to hit him but he ducked and managed to hit him back. The lad ran off.

"He said the lad returned later on with his mate and it all kicked off again.

"He said, 'I think I stabbed the lad only once'."

Mr Shaughnessy said he asked Shaw why he stabbed the man and the defendant said he did not remember.

Earlier Mrs Shaughnessy told the jury Shaw's voice was very shaken when they met him.

"He said there had been some trouble, and he thinks he might have stabbed somebody," she said.

And when they returned to the house, Mrs Shaughnessy said: "He just kept saying, 'Well, I think I have killed somebody'.

"I asked him why he had done it. He said, 'self defence'.

"I gave Scouse (Shaw) another fag. He told me he had got into a fight. He said, 'I think I lost it because I am sure that I stabbed somebody'."

Mrs Shaughnessy added: "Lee went on to say he wasn't going to allow the lad to beat 10 shades out of him."

Mr Malhi, aged 29, of Beverley Drive, Bentilee, was stabbed several times with the fatal blow penetrating his heart.
