Mr Mitchell goes out in fine, upbeat style
SUNDAY saw the last performance before "the Mitch" closes for two years for extensive renovations, and what a special occasion this proved to be.
After a short film and presentation by project director David Dobson, 12 local companies sang, danced and acted their hearts out in spirited performances. There were songs from the musicals, including Scrooge and The Wizard Of Oz. Soloists performed stunning versions of Moon River and Memory. There was edgy urban dance as well as evocative classical ballet. 'Ilda, the 'ome 'elp from 'anly, provided one of many comedy moments, as did banter between hosts Alan Hill and Alan Brammer.
There were a few technical hitches and the show overran considerably, lasting well over four hours. But the energy and hard work that pulsed from each of the 25 acts was electrifying. The theatre was full to capacity and the atmosphere intense, making for an emotional and uplifting end to this chapter in the Mitch's history.
