BEING handed the captaincy will help to bring the best out of midfielder Luke Murphy, according to manager Steve Davis.

The 22-year-old will skipper the side against Tranmere Rovers tomorrow having stepped in against Coventry last week after Ashley Westwood was sold to Aston Villa on transfer deadline day.

Davis hasn't made a decision about who will be captain in the long term – and admits experienced keeper Steve Phillips would have been a prime candidate if he wasn't still on the sidelines recovering from a knee problem.

However, the Crewe boss was impressed with how Murphy led the team against Coventry, a game the Alex won 1-0.

He said: "I think it will help his game and will give him that maturity and bit of experience he needs. He's having to deal with players and organise a bit more and have responsibility he's not had before. That will help him develop. He did a good job and the lads respect him.

"He stepped up to it on Saturday so I don't see any reason why I wouldn't give it to him in this game.

"His performances have been good since he got back in the team.

"He moans and groans a bit and is a bit like an old granny at times, but he's a decent lad."

Meanwhile, Davis is hoping to bring in two signings now the window for loan deals has reopened.

He's been in talks with his former Stoke City club-mate Steve Bould, the Arsenal assistant manager, to see whether he can borrow a midfielder and a striker from the Gunners.

His midfield targets are believed to include Arsenal duo Craig Eastmond, aged 21, and Chuks Aneke, aged 19.

The main stumbling block is the players' wages, but Davis has alternative options as he lines up replacements for Westwood and injured striker Mathias Pogba.
