Football: Striker may make his Mark in Senior Cup

Tuesday, November 10, 2009, 09:20

LEEK Town manager Wayne Johnson could hand a start to striker Mark Grice in tonight's Staffs Senior Cup tie at home to Newcastle Town.

Grice, a prolific marksman with former club Wolstanton United, has been used only as a substitute since joining Leek last month, but helped them earn a point against top of the table Sheffield FC in UniBond Division One South last Saturday.

Johnson said: "Mark held the ball up well and made our equaliser for Paul McMahon, so I am looking to give him a decent run."

Leek will be wihout the unavailable Wayne Corden and Nick Ward, so Peter Johnson comes into the frame along with Matt Johnson, who has served a one-match ban.

NEWCASTLE manager Greg Clowes admits the match is not high on his priority list as he concentrates on this weekend's FA Vase tie at Causeway.

Clowes said: "Only five of the players who were in last Saturday's side will start, but it will still be a good team."

Young centre-back Adam Dawson. signed from Winsford, will make his debut, and there will be shirts for goalkeeper Greg Smith, Andy Bourne and Ian Willis.

KIDSGROVE will receive six bottles of champagne and a framed certificate as the UniBond Division One South "Club of the Month" prior to their league game against Rushall Olympic at the Seddon Stadium.

A five-game unbeaten run in October that included a hat-trick of away wins took Kidsgrove to the highest placing in their history at the top of the league before an enforced two-week break.

A point at Shepshed last weekend sees Grove going into the game in second place against a useful Rushall side who are fourth.

Grove centre-back Tom Schwarz is expected to be fit after needing stitches for an eye injury after the Shepshed game.

Assistant manager Kevin Street is set to start NANTWICH Town's home first-round Cheshire Senior Cup tie against Blue Square North side Hyde United.

The former Stafford Rangers midfielder has recovered from long-term cruciate ligament damage.

Manager Peter Hall is torn between fielding other fringe players or giving his seniors a work-out after their disappointing second-half performance in drawing 1-1 at Hucknall last Saturday.

CONGLETON joint-manager Anthony Buckle wants to use his side's Cheshire Senior Cup tie at Runcorn Linnets as preparation for Saturday's FA Vase clash with Shildon.

Buckle plans to start with the side he has in mind for next weekend to give the players a game together, and has Ryan Baker, Scott Dundas and fellow manager Darren Twigg available.

All three missed Saturday's Vodkat Premier Division game at Silsden, where second-placed Congleton lost 1-0 to surrender their unbeaten league record ... and fall 14 points behind leaders Newcastle Town.

ALSAGER Town are also involved in the Cheshire Senior Cup with a tough tie away to UniBond Division One North side Woodley Sports, while ROCESTER visit Oadby in the second round of the Aspire Midland Alliance League Cup.
