Golf: Great Scott hits back to beat dad

SCOTT Smallman admits the prospect of being beaten by his dad inspired him to victory in the club championship at Newcastle.

The two-time former winner trailed first-round leader Steve Smallman by five shots at the break, but responded with a six under par 66 in the afternoon to storm home by four shots.

Smallman junior said: "I would never have lived it down if my dad had won. I had to show him who was boss.

"I thought I had blown it when I was five over with a 77, but the fact that one of my main rivals, Jason Timmis, scored 76 and that my dad was leading kept me going.

"Conditions were not too bad, but nothing went right until the afternoon.

"I was nine under going through 13 and the course record of 65 held by Andrew Bradshaw was in my head, but then I blew up a bit. I would like to have taken the record, but I was happy to take the win."

The 20-year-old from Adderley Green with a handicap of plus two has run into form of late and won the Barlaston club title for the second time last month.

He said: "To be champion at both clubs in the same season means quite a bit to me."

IZAAK WALTON: Newcomer Kevin Smith won the club championship at his first attempt.

Smith had rounds of 73 and 76 to beat Grant Dollochin (79, 72) and Luke Goodall (75, 76) by two shots.

Smith, a 53-year old self employed courier from Trentham, only joined the club last October after being a member at Burslem, Barlaston Trentham Park and Newcastle.

He said: "I had played at Izaak Walton over a number of years and the course was maturing and getting a lot better all the time.

"The club has tended to be pooh-poohed, but after I played there last season I thought 'this is it, I am coming' and I have no regrets."
