ANNA Bebington launched her pursuit of Olympic gold at the 2012 London Games with double success at the first World Cup regatta of the season.

The 26-year-old from Longsdon, pictured, teamed up with former GB partner Annie Vernon to win the women's double sculls in Banyoles yesterday.

They then partnered Katie Greves and Beth Rodford to win gold in the women's quadruple sculls as well.

For Bebington, the winner of a bronze medal in the double skulls at the Beijing Olympic Games last year, it was a great start to the new season.

With her partner in China, Elise Laverick, opting to retire, it was back to the future teaming up with Vernon, with whom she won the 2006 World Cup.

They took an early advantage over the field in the women's double sculls final, creating a third of a length lead over the Belarus team after 250m.

By the 750m mark they had gone a length ahead while GB's second-ranked crew of Beth Rodford and Katie Greves were back in sixth.

Poland began to challenge at the half-way mark tracked by Italy, who showed why they are known to have a fast finish but ending the race in second place.

But they could not touch Vernon and Bebington, who took GB's first gold of the day with Rodford and Greves coming sixth.

"I really love racing in the double and it's great to start the season in a fast boat", said Bebington.

The women's quad was raced in difficult conditions, but the British team eventually won with ease.

Bebingtion explained: "It was really tricky. At the start of that race waves were coming up over the boat. So we only really relaxed and got into the rhythm in the middle of the race."

In all, Great Britain won a record-breaking nine gold medals. The second World Cup regatta takes place in Munich on June 19-21 with the third in Lucerne on July 10-12.
