Port Vale: Griffith going for a Terriers treble

Friday, November 27, 2009, 09:04

ANTHONY Griffith will be striving to complete a hat-trick of wins over his over his home-town club when Huddersfield and Port Vale clash in the FA Cup tomorrow (3pm).

Griffith, who was raised in the Brackenhall area of Huddersfield, helped Doncaster secure a 2-1 Johnstone's Paint Trophy victory at the Galpharm Stadium in October 2006.

And last season, the 23-year-old returned to haunt the League One outfit again, by helping Vale record a sensational 4-3 FA Cup First Round success in West Yorkshire.

Griffith said: "Playing at the Galpharm is always special for me as my friends and family come along to watch.

"But they are a good side that have a lot of new players. Huddersfield are a Championship side with a Championship stadium and a lot of money behind them.

"I'm sure they will be up there in League One this season, but we've got to go out there and play with no fear.

"When you play against bigger teams it's our chance to step up – and there is more pressure on them because they are from a higher division."

Griffith, a self-confessed Chelsea fan, joined Halifax Town as a 16-year-old, before his exploits playing for West Yorkshire's representative side earned him a move to Doncaster Rovers.

His home-town club, led by former Newcastle midfielder Lee Clark, lie fifth in football's third tier, while they have won five of their last six outings.

Those victories included their 6-1 FA Cup First Round hammering of League Two side Dagenham & Redbridge, although they head into tomorrow's match still smarting from Tuesday's 2-1 defeat at Swindon.

Clark's backroom staff also has a strong Newcastle connection, boasting former Toon Army coaches Terry McDermott and Derek Fazackerley.

Huddersfield are unbeaten at the Galpharm Stadium this season, winning seven and drawing two of their nine League One clashes.

However, defensive frailties have contributed to six defeats in nine league games on the road.

They will be without striker Robbie Simpson and loan midfielder Danny Drinkwater for tomorrow's second-round tie. Both are out with serious thigh injuries.

Vale head into the game without suspended skipper Tommy Fraser and injured centre-half Gareth Owen, who will today undergo minor surgery on a fractured cheekbone.

Midfielder Doug Loft, who hit his first goal for Vale during Tuesday's 2-2 home draw with Torquay, is doubtful with a groin injury.

Loan striker Lewis Haldane yesterday had a scan on a knee injury that could rule him out.

However, striker Geoff Horsfield will make his return to the Vale squad after recovering from a groin tear.

Manager Micky Adams is expecting a positive response from his team after criticising their lacklustre display against Torquay.

"I've no doubt we will need to be at our best against Huddersfield," he said.

"If you look at our display against Torquay, I would say only five out of the 11 played to their potential, so that means six had an off-day.

"If we produce similar stats on Saturday we've got no chance, so we need everybody on top of their game."
