Football: Meir KA battle back to win FA Cup thriller
Thursday, August 21, 2008, 09:40
Meir lost Michael Wright to a second bookable offence on 66 minutes and went 3-1 down after 77.
But they forced extra-time with two late goals, fell behind again, before battling back with a 105th-minute equaliser which set up their shoot-out win.
Meir joint-manager Scott Reaney said: "I cannot believe it! The lads dug in and deserved the win. I'm glad we are through to the next round and a home tie against Nuneaton Griff."
Meir dominated early on and were unlucky when both Adam Coulston and Andy Teague hit the woodwork.
They deservedly edged in front on 25 minutes when a Kieron Woolley free-kick was volleyed in by Wright.
The lead lasted 10 minutes before Goodrich equalised. Meir keeper Ritchie Amison dropped Adam Simkiss's free-kick and Wayne Hughes tapped in the equaliser.
On 66 minutes, a cross from the left was handled by Wright and he was dismissed for a second bookable.
Amison saved Cameron Morgan's penalty, but could not prevent him knocking in the rebound.
It then seemed curtains for Meir when Morgan cut in to stretch the lead on 77 minutes. But on came Meir substitutes Chris Baker and Ryan Miszkiel, who reduced the lead with a header.
Then, with the last move of the 90 minutes, a Mark Philcock free-kick was back-headed in by Nathan Chinshaw.
In extra-time, Morgan forged Goodrich ahead again with his hat-trick goal, but Chinshaw levelled on 105 minutes.
In the shoot-out, Amison dived low to save the second Goodrich penalty, while Meir scored through Woolley, Russell Leadbetter, Philcock, Chris Baker and Chin-Shaw.
MEIR KA: Amison, Kelter, Wright, Harrison, Leadbetter, D Reaney, Owen, Woolley, Teague, Chinshaw, Coulston. Subs: Philcock, Bradford, Baker, Miszkiel, Brookes, Clegg.
ECCLESHALL went down by the only goal to local rivals Leek CSOB in their Vodkat NWCL Division One clash at Pershall Park.
Ashley Flood scored the Old Boys' winner on 29 minutes and, while Eccleshall largely dictated the second half, they had Adam Stonier sent off for foul and abusive language.
