BMX star Shanaze Reade will miss the chance to claim a third successive world title in July with a shoulder injury ruling her out for four months.

The 20-year-old from Crewe requires keyhole surgery on her right shoulder after a fall in training.

The problem rules Reade out of the defence of her BMX title in Adelaide, Australia next month, as well as this weekend's UCI mountain bike World Cup at Fort William, an event which would have meant she had competed at world-class standard in three disciplines – BMX, Track and Mountain Bike.

"I'm very disappointed that I can't race at the BMX Worlds this year," said Reade.

"I really wanted to get out there and defend my title. I'm also disappointed I can't make my mountain bike debut.

"My focus now is on recovery and getting back into training as soon as I can, so I can begin my preparations for London 2012."

ONE of North Staffordshire's most promising young riders, 15-year-old Declan Byrne, completed a notable double to extended his lead in the A Class of the Brooks Cycles Track League.

Not only did the Biddulph schoolboy win round two of the Keirin League, but he also rode the fastest 10 miles seen at the track for several years.

Byrne led the dash for the line in the Keirin with Brooks Cycles team-mate Robert Lambton, but got the verdict by a tyre's width. World Masters champion Steve Cronshaw was third.

In the 10-mile event, eight riders fought out the finish with Byrne again beating Lambton home in 21 minutes, 10 seconds. This gave him nine points on the night.

In the B Class events, first-time track league competitor Matt Gee rode superbly to win three individual events and was also a member of the winning team sprint.

This has taken him straight to fifth place in the B league table. Also of note was the performance of 14-year-old Sam Birchall, who finished third in the final 10-mile event.

CLAYTON'S Martin Ford (Goldtec) took bronze in the West Midlands road race championships in Shropshire.

Brian Camfield, the 61-year-old Stone Wheelers rider, continued his successful comeback to racing with second place in the over-60s category at the LVRC Sevale road race near Malvern.

NEWCASTLE RC 2001's Nick Slater won the latest Tean evening 10 race in 23.31, a week after setting a course best of 22.41.

LYME RC/Swinnerton Cycles veteran Barry Charlton took second place in the Lea Valley 50 with a season best time of 1.44.57. Lyme team-mates Will Corden and Mark Wynn had reason for celebration after the Manchester TTA Open 50 when both beat the two-hour barrier.

Corden, aged 18, in his first attempt at the distance, recorded 1.59.31, while Wynn improved his previous best by three minutes to 1.59.50.

Also riding his first 50 was Darren Berrisford, who came home in 2.00.16. Veteran Chris Wilcox's time of 2.02.04 was just outside his personal best.

LYME'S 2008 women's time trial champion Tracy Rowlinson began the defence of her title at the Newport CC event and was pleased with her time of 30.30 in windy conditions.

Kenny Atherton's second place in the TLI over 40s road race was even more impressive because he finished the Anfield BC 100-mile time trial the day before in 4.25.28.

LYME'S times in the Crewe Clarion Evening 10 were: Mark Wynn 23.54, Phil Collett 25.49, Chris Deakin 27.04, Ken Rushton 28.13, Richard O'Keefe 28.50, Jenny Hand 28.54 and Adam Brennan 29.04.

CONGLETON CC's times in the Anfield BC 100: Karl Austin 4.15.45, Graham Barker 4.38.41, Edgar Reynolds 4.47.00, Peter Nelson 5.25.44.

With 12 events remaining, Karl Austin leads the Bob Job competition, with 83 points, from Tony Elliott (64).
