Cycling: National races return to area

NATIONAL road-racing will return to North Staffordshire and South Cheshire in 2010.

The events will be a mixture of The League International races and League Veteran Racing Cyclists races, including the now traditional five-event Cheshire TLI evening race series at Lower Withington, starting at the end of April.

This is followed by three events on Oulton Park motor racing track, which has regularly attracted more than 100 riders of all ages.

The new season kicks off with the regular Newcastle RC 2001-Modern Glass Staffordshire Oatcake event for the LVRC on the Swynnerton circuit at the start of April.

They round off the season with the LVRC races on Swynnerton circuit.

At the end of April, Audlem CC will build on the success of their inaugural event by putting on an race as part of the LVRC's flagship Percy Stallard series.

Sandwiched in-between will be Stone Wheelers' TLI road races at Swynnerton.

The local region of the LVRC will be putting on their criterium championships on the Darley Moor circuit in June and there will be the usual three Cleansweep events on the circuit in August and September.

The other new event is Lyme RC-Swinnerton Cycles summer road race.

In addition, Macclesfield Wheelers will be putting on events on the Siddington circuit, with Manchester club Seamons CC promoting on the Lower Peover circuit.

NEWCASTLE RC 2001 rider Phil Houlton, recently crowned as an LVRC track champion, maintained his challenge in the Manchester Velo Friday Night Track League with wins in the scratch and the Course de Primes races.

BERYL Swash has stepped down after 10 years as Congleton CC's social secretary.

Her place was taken by Georgina Norton, who also becomes welfare secretary.

The club's annual prize presentation and dinner takes place on Sunday, December 6 at the Pavilion in the Park (6pm).

The club meets every Thursday at 8.30pm at the Rugby Club, Park Street and welcomes anyone who would like to swap ideas and stories on all cycling topics.
