Crewe Alex: Davis named as Crewe number two
Davis, aged 43, was named as Gudjon Thordarson's number two yesterday and leaves as head coach at UniBond Premier Division side Nantwich Town on June 29.
Jack, who served the Alex in two spells between 1998 and 2007, was impressed by Davis while playing for him at the Weaver Stadium last season.
"This is a good move for Steve and he's got all the requirements to be successful," said Jack.
"He's intelligent and he loves coaching. He's strict, but he gives players respect if they work hard for him. He's certainly got the best out of the senior players at Nantwich.
"When I went to Nantwich last summer I was coming back from injury and he encouraged me to get fit. As you get older your legs go, but Steve gave me the freedom of the park and I have got my passion back for the game.
"Steve deserves this opportunity. He'll certainly be a hard act to follow."
A one-time Stoke City trainee, Davis was one of Dario Gradi's first signings at Crewe in 1983. He went on to make 170 appearances before joining Burnley in 1987.
He later had spells at Barnsley, who paid £180,000 for him, Oxford, Macclesfield and Northwich Vics, where he was also briefly manager in 2003.
Since taking over at Nantwich in the summer of 2004, he has guided The Dabbers to an FA Vase final triumph in 2006 and two successive promotions.
Davis's assistant at Nantwich, Peter Hall, has taken temporary charge at the Weaver Stadium and will be a contender for the vacancy.
