AN INTERNATIONAL cap and gold medal belonging to Sir Stanley Matthews are set to go under the hammer.

The items, which have been put up for sale by a vendor who wishes to remain anonymous, will be at auction on Tuesday.

The cap was awarded to the legendary Stoke City winger, far right, for playing for England in the Home Championship 1954-55 against Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

Sir Stan was 40 years old when he played for England against Scotland on April 2, 1955 and the final score was 7-2.

Louis Taylor auctioneers, which is holding the auction at its rooms in Town Road, Hanley, estimates the cap will fetch between £3,000 and £5,000.

The nine caret gold medal was awarded to Sir Stan on September 19, 1934 for playing for the Football League against Ireland in Belfast.

Sir Stan was 19 years old and he scored in the match which the England Football League Team won 6-1.

Just 10 days later he won his first cap for England playing against Wales. The medal is expected to fetch between £800 and £1,200.

Sheila Doolan from Louis Taylor said: "Both items have come from a private source in Stoke-on-Trent.

"The cap is in a lovely condition. You expect caps to get a bit tatty over the years but this one is great considering it's more than 50 years old.

"People are very interested in football memorabilia and Sir Stan is an iconic name.

"The medal is a different end of his career. It is also in an excellent condition."

Sir Stan died aged 85 in 2000, after a career in football spanning 33 years.

Sir Stan's daughter Jean Gough is delighted to see more of her father's memorabilia up for auction. She said: "It's fantastic to see bits and pieces which belonged to him reappearing again.

"He was not really bothered about his material possessions. He leant quite a few things to exhibitions and when he moved countries over the years things got lost.

"A lot of his things are all over the place so it's nice when they turn up in Stoke-on-Trent."

Viewing for the auction will take place tomorrow from 10am to 7pm and Friday from 10am to 4pm at Louis Taylor Auction Rooms. For more details call Clive Hillier on 01782 214111.
