A modern day Papillon?
14:35 - 21-July-2008
The critically acclaimed 1973 film starring Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman will get the modern-day treatment, The Independent reports.
Schindler's List and Gladiator producer Branko Lustig, and The Black Dahlia filmmaker John Kelly are apparently on board to make the film, and Spanish production company Atlantia Canarias are also behind the remake.
The original film is an adaptation of an autobiography by Henri Charriere which describes his many plots to escape jail after being wrongly convicted of murder in French Guiana.
Ali Jaffar, Europe correspondent at Variety magazine, said he was optimistic about the remake.
"Any remake is a risky endeavour, particularly one which is affectionately remembered. But it has source material from the book which can be updated for the 21st century. The 1973 film was just one interpretation of the book, and this one can be very different." he is reported to have said.
