Romantics hope love can blossom in park's special Valentine event

THOSE couples brave enough to pop the question on the big day can go down on bended knee in the leafy setting of Longton Park.

The attraction plays host to a special Valentine's Day event called Be My Valentine In The Park, on Sunday, where the mood will be set with romantic serenades from Blurton singer Craig Wood, while those already married can renew their vows.

The event was the idea of friends Lillian Dodd, aged 59, pictured left, of nearby Sutherland Avenue, and 63-year-old Sue Whalley, pictured right, of Trentham Road, who should know a thing or two about love, given that between them they have been married to their husbands for 80 years.

Lilian says: "We've known each other about 10 years. We both live in Dresden and I run a swimming group there, while Sue also has a business in the local community, as she runs a chip shop.

"We come up with different ideas every year of things we can do in the community.

"Hopefully everyone that comes on Sunday will have a good time.

"It is an opportunity for people to spend the day with their loved ones and have a lovely time in the park."

Lilian says: "The pastor from the church will be there to renew people's vows and if there are any couples who wish to renew them obviously they have to get in touch prior to the event.

"People planning on proposing will receive a single red rose to give to their loved ones, and if they wish to bring a love poem along to read to their partner, florists Parsley & Sage, are sponsoring the event, so the winners will receive a bouquet of flowers."

Sue has been married to Peter for 43 years and the couple have three children.

She says: "It was quite romantic when we renewed our wedding vows after 40 years of marriage. We spend a lot of time together, as we also work together, and our wedding vows mean a lot to us which is one of the reasons we renewed them."

Lilian has been married to Alan for 37 years and they have one daughter.

She says: "One thing Alan does every year on our wedding anniversary is send me a bouquet of flowers. He keeps saying he's going to stop doing it, but he never does."

Anyone wishing to take part in Be My Valentine In The Park can call Lilian on 01782 319285.
