Sophie Fallows, aged eight, said: "It was great travelling on the train. We got to see lots of trees and flowers. It was interesting listening to the veterans about their time during the war."

Demi Bradburn, aged nine, said: "It was fun, but also a little scary, to dress up and pretend to be evacuees. We even acted out being chosen by families. It was a fun day and the best bit was going through the Leekbrook tunnel in the dark, we all screamed with excitement as well as being scared."

Liam Allen, aged eight, said: "It was good fun dressing up. I wore a short-sleeved shirt and trousers which mum cut short. I also wore a black scarf and borrowed my nan's friend's brown cap."

Tilly Griffiths, aged eight, said: "It was really good to go on the train and all the activities made me feel like we were in the war. I think it must have been really scary for children being evacuated."

Millie Egerton, aged eight, said: "We went into the tea rooms at the station and did a quiz about war time aircraft and we listened to the veterans' stories. They were very interesting."
