It's a great time to take up tennis
I WOULD like to thank you for the coverage of Alsager Tennis Club's plans to build a new pavilion (The Sentinel, January 25) and would like to explain developments in tennis over recent years.
First of all, tennis has become a sport which is played outdoors throughout the year. Mid and south Cheshire has a a winter league with five divisions.
All-year play has been made possible by the fact that most clubs now have artificial grass and/or porous macadam courts. Both of these surfaces drain very rapidly. Only snow and ice prevent play.
The second major change relates to rackets. These are made of carbon fibre and have synthetic strings that are resistant to damp. If you are hardy, or foolish, enough you can play in the rain.

The third major change is a social one.
Many people are continuing to play much longer, and clubs now have plenty of members still playing in their 60s and 70s. I have also noticed an influx of former football, rugby or hockey players.
Sadly, few pupils have the opportunity to learn to play tennis at school, because there are not enough courts.
Most clubs have organised coaching for beginners.
I would especially encourage parents to get their children to take up tennis.
With luck, tennis will give them fun, exercise and friends for decades to come.
