PRIMARY school pupil Bethany White was today due to present the Prince of Wales with a commemorative plate of her own design.

The 10-year-old won a Stoke-on-Trent City Council-run competition to design a plate marking 100 years since the city's federation to give to Prince Charles during his visit to the city.

The Crescent Primary School pupil's design was picked out of 450 entries by children from 11 schools across the city.

Bethany's mum Joanne Abel-White, aged 31, from Meir, said: "She's a little bit nervous because it's a big day, but she's really excited.

"I'm very proud and so happy she won. She worked very hard on the design."

Charles will also be able to sink a special ale designed to mark the 100 years since federation.

The city council has commissioned Burslem's Titanic Brewery to brew a new beer to celebrate the centenary.

And its directors, Keith and Dave Bott, will hand a special presentation pack of Potteries Centenary Ale to the Prince of Wales during a civic reception today.

"We are thrilled to be chosen to help to celebrate the centenary of our brewery's home city," said Keith.

Centenary Ale is a 4.8 per cent, full-bodied deep golden beer with citrus notes and a clean hoppy finish, which brewers hope will appeal to the Prince.

The brewery will donate 10 pence to the Lord Mayor of Stoke-on-Trent's charity fund from every pint or bottle sold.

Titanic Brewery was founded in Burslem in 1985 and was named in honour of Hanley-born Titanic captain Edward Smith.

“Hope you enjoyed the day Bethany. I look forward to seeing the photos tomorrow. Only one thing seemed out of place watching Prince Charles on the news, an 'expert' saying that Prince Charles was descended from the King of Mercia. Experts aye!”
