Car technician Keith Ash, aged 64, lives in Clayton Road, Newcastle, with his wife Marie, aged 54. He feels the specially selected ale and friendly environment of The Smithy in Wolstanton should be highly recommended.

Why The Smithy?

It's a free house, selling many local ales that are very cheap for what they are, as well as covering nearly all of the big football matches, as Sky Sports is available on a big screen.

The atmosphere is always very friendly and inviting; the pub simply can't be faulted.

How often do you go?

I usually go twice a week, on a Tuesday and a Friday night. Fridays are always popular, so the atmosphere is great, and I also like to go midweek, early evening on a Tuesday for a nice relaxing drink, and perhaps watch a game.

What do you normally drink?

Generally I prefer a nice malt whiskey, but I always opt for the ale when I go to The Smithy just because of the fine quality they offer. A favourite of mine is the guest ale Moorland, which has remained on the guest list of local ales that appear in there for a long time. They generally offer about five or six guest ales, which are kept on the list according to whether they are considered a popular choice.

How much would you normally spend?

I normally stay for about three to four hours, and spend no more than £15 depending on who is getting the rounds in.

Who would you recommend it to?

I think anybody who fancies a nice, down-to-earth pub, which is dog-friendly, with great ale would enjoy a trip to The Smithy.
