Heritage initiative creates opportunity

GOVERNMENT minister Ian Austin has been to see the latest phase of a £4 million project to revitalise Burslem.

The Burslem Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI) offers grants to landowners to renovate historic buildings.

But the scheme, now in its final phase, expires in 2012.

Joan Walley, MP for Stoke-on-Trent North, invited West Midlands Minister Mr Austin to survey the progress that has been made.

She said: "I intend to keep up the pressure on the Government to ensure that the THI scheme continues in some form."

Mr Austin said : "This is exactly what we want to see happening in Burslem. It is a practical example of how investing in regeneration can create opportunities for local people."
