TRIBUTES have been paid to a former newsagent who went on to dedicate more than a decade to helping vulnerable people.

Father-of-two Peter Morrall, of Grove Road, Mount Pleasant, lost a two-year battle with cancer earlier this week.

Yet despite his illness the avid Stoke City supporter continued to work as a carer, where he struck up a bond with residents young and old.

Now relatives have paid tribute to the Hanley-born 65-year-old.

Wife Pam, aged 65, who met Peter in the 1960s when the pair both worked for Stoke-based engineering firm Anco, said: "He was a real family man and had a really friendly nature that people warmed to."

Raised on Tintern Street, Peter, who attended, Wellington Road School went on to work as a salesman before taking on his parents' newsagent's business.

From 1970 until 1985 Peter and wife Pam were familiar faces behind the counter of Smithpool Road based PT and PS Morrall Newsagent's.

The couple relocated to The Strand in Longton where they ran a shop under the same name until 1992.

But Peter continued in the trade by providing cover to other newsagent's in the region.

Then, in the late 1990s, Peter, a keen music fan, decided on a new career path and worked as a care worker in the community. Pam said: "He was loved by the people he cared for and would take a small group of them to Stoke City matches."

In November 2010 Peter was diagnosed with bowel cancer and underwent an operation to remove a tumour, and a course of chemotherapy.

Daughter Donna Morrall, aged 35, who now lives in Milton Keynes with four-year-old son Joseph, said: "When dad woke up from the operation he looked at us and said: 'ding dang doo'. He was always so brave.

"He always made me feel so special and loved. He was such a protective, kind-hearted and loving man."

Donna, who works as a police officer, added: "There's a huge gap in my life without my 'Daddy Bear'.

"It already hurts thinking that if ever I meet someone and one day get married – my amazing dad won't be there to walk me down the aisle."

Son Dale Morrall, aged 37, an IT consultant, who lives in London, said: "He was my best friend and even now I always think 'what would dad do?' when I have a decision to make. He had such strong values which I keep with me.

"Everybody who met him liked him and he never seemed to have a bad word to say about anyone.

"It's thanks to him and mum that I could go on to university and have a good career."

After struggling with the illness Peter went to the Douglas Macmillan Hospice where he stayed for two days before passing away on February 10.

Peter's funeral will be held at Hanley's St Luke's Church on February 26 at noon.
