Our postal service is worst in mainland Britain
CUSTOMERS in the ST postcode area are suffering from the worst postal service in mainland Britain.
Latest Royal Mail figures show just 89.5 per cent of first-class letters were delivered on time in the ST postcode area between March and September.
-

That contrasts with the national average of 92.8 per cent and 93 per cent in South Cheshire between those dates.
But Royal Mail can no longer link the poor service to a series of strikes, which meant postal workers in Burslem spent last Christmas on picket lines.
Instead, union leaders are blaming Royal Mail for transferring 80 overnight sorting office staff from Stoke's Leek Road depot to Wolverhampton this summer.
More than 100 more Stoke positions are also expected to go to Wolverhampton early next year.
Lee Barron, Midlands regional secretary of the Communication Workers' Union, said today: "The quality of service seems to come second for Royal Mail because they are basing their performance on a downsizing programme which means Stoke-on-Trent's mail is going 40 miles down the road to be sorted. That is one of the reasons why the quality of service has suffered. Deliveries are getting later and later.
"Royal Mail should have come up with an option where Stoke-on-Trent's mail is sorted in Stoke-on-Trent. Instead, if someone has sent a letter from Hanley to Biddulph, it is getting sent to Wolverhampton, which is ridiculous.
"Royal Mail needs to get back to the principles of public service."
A breakdown of the ST performance shows 90.1 per cent of first-class mail was delivered on time between July and September, compared with 88.7 per cent in the previous three months.
That is an improvement on last year, when just 79.4 per cent of first-class mail was delivered on time to the strike-hit ST postcode area between April 2007 and the end of March.
A Royal Mail spokesman said: "The quality of service level for first-class mail in the ST postcode area is below the standard we expect and our customers deserve.
"All our efforts are focused on improving the service we deliver to our customers."
Government watchdog Consumer Focus has pledged to monitor postal performance in the ST area.
A spokesman said: "While targets for mail delivery in Stoke-on-Trent were not quite met, the figures are showing reasonable improvement and are generally heading in the right direction."

“i dont usually get involved in these debates that are normally the conversation hubs of the less educated. Firstly why when an organisation such as the Royal Mail fails in its obligation to the customer do the ingorant masses point an acusatory finger in the direction of the people who have no influence in the decisions that reduce our service to what it has become. The ridiculous comments by Mustavatugg (the name speaks volumes for this persons mentality) about privitisation are insane as all the companies that where under the conservatives perform no better than they did before but at higher costs that furnish the pockets of the priviliged few. Avid reader comes out with the usual garbage of sack them all very intellectual thinking i bet that took some thought -turn off the computer and concentrate on Jeremy Kyle to which your IQ is in league with. Dave from Clayton the times of delivey are set nationally in the week which for you is Monday - Friday deliveries can only be undertaken after 09.30 if you don't take your meal break if you do then its 10.00. On a Saturday Royal Mail retained the structure that was previously in place meaning a 7.30 start time for the delivery. I hope this helps in clearing up some of the opinions of those who are intent on malicoiusly bad mouthing for their own gratification and jealuously those who choose to stand and fight for a public service. I say well done to the posties you do a great job and ignore the comments of the half wits on this site that while your at work sit at home and complain whilst scratching of the days lottery instants. Oh yes and still think the postie is responsible for not delivering their giro on time (even though this service hasn't exsisted for 6 years).”

“I used to have to visit the international mail sorting plant near Heathrow.
The canteen there had a Harry Ramsdens, Pizza Hut, Sky TV, Snooker Tables and video games.
Now I know we should admire organisations that look after their workforce but I think this is perhaps a step or two too far. And when a firm has a culture that allows this, isn't it a case of the tale wags the dog?”

“You can blame the posties till you're blue in the face but my experience of working for these clowns is that the standard of managers is appalling. Even their chief exec commented on this a few years ago saying that most of them were a waste of space.”

“I have recently purchased a limited edition of J.K. Towlings Beadle the Bard from Amazon. It is a collectors edition and I have paid first class postage to have this delivered on the day of publication. That date was 4th December, it is now 8th December and still no sign. The poor postment are doing their job as best they can in very difficult circumstances, but as usual, it is decisions from above. It is they who decreed that our post should go to Wolverhampton to be sorted. I'm not quite sure why this move was implemented but it certainly wasn't to ensure that when you pay for a first class postal service you actually get it.”

“In defence of my postman in Mow Cop, he does a very good job in spite of the Post Office management whom I guess do not know how a postal service, should be a service to it's customers i.e. us the public.
They keep changing his rounds, days and starting times, and what manangment Einstien thought of having the post delivered around midday or later. So here's to the posties who do their best in getting our mail to us despite the efforts of the higher-ups in the Post Office to thwart his efforts.”

“to dave in clayton, the reason you get your post early on a saturday is because its the only day we are allowed out early. Mon-Fri we cant go out til 10.30ish. The reason for this i so Royal Mail can charge companies extra to get there post early weekdays, not because postmen don't want to go out early!”

“The Postmen and women should be glad they have a job and it must be a doddle as you rarely hear of a postie leaving until he/she retires !
I say sack the under performing Post men/women, setup an assessment centre to determine who can read and walk but also display a sense of Customer Care as this is clearly missing from the delivery staff today as they are always contemplating striking and affecting the customer, especially when the Customer needs them i.e. Xmas!
Bring them in-line with other industries and drive their productivity and performance if not get rid !!!!
Good Luck to the management !!”
