Port Vale: Virus hits Vale's preparations

Thursday, October 22, 2009, 09:00

PORT Vale's preparations for Saturday's match with Cheltenham Town have been derailed after a virus swept through the first-team squad.

Eight-goal top-scorer Marc Richards, first-choice defenders Lee Collins, Kris Taylor and John McCombe, captain Tommy Fraser and midfielder Ross Davidson have been hit hardest by the outbreak. They have been suffering from flu-like symptoms, including chest infections, diarrhoea and sickness.

Several players were sent home from training on Tuesday, before Adams banned his squad from Vale Park yesterday in a bid to prevent further casualties ahead of the League Two encounter in Burslem.

But Adams, pictured right, said: "I expect everybody to report back for training today.

"These things happen and I'm not going to worry about it until we have seen and assessed the players.

"Our preparations for the Cheltenham match have been hit, though, because we sent players home on Tuesday and couldn't continue what we had been doing on Monday.

"We have a club doctor, who will advise any affected players."

Vale will be desperate for a clean bill of health as they go in search of their fourth straight win in all competitions against struggling Cheltenham, who are without a win in six matches.

Richards and Taylor complained about feeling unwell after Saturday's 2-1 victory at Crewe, while McCombe was forced to miss training on Monday.

Collins was absent from training on Tuesday, while Fraser was struck down by the illness yesterday.

Fraser is already struggling to overcome a groin strain and was expected to be sidelined for at least a fortnight.

However, Adams has refused to completely write off his chances of facing Cheltenham.

But injured striker Geoff Horsfield (groin) and midfielder Doug Loft (calf) are ruled out.

Saturday's opponents have also suffered a turbulent week after manager Martin Allen was put on gardening leave on Tuesday.

Allen has been asked to stay away from Whaddon Road, pending an investigation into an alleged incident at a nightclub, leaving assistant manager John Schofield in temporary charge.

Meanwhile, Vale have handed out at least 750 free coach tickets for fans travelling to their Johnstone's Paint Trophy Northern Area quarter-final at Bradford City.

Club sponsor Harlequin Property sponsored 15 free coaches which are fully booked up ahead of the November 10 cup tie (7.45pm).

Adams said: "It's a big boost knowing so many fans will be travelling to Bradford. It is a fantastic gesture by Harlequin."

Match tickets can only be bought at Valley Parade on the night of the game. Adult tickets cost £10 (concessions £5).
