Port Vale: Richman faces battle for selection

Friday, September 11, 2009, 09:20

VALE midfielder Simon Richman says the threat of being shown the exit door can only fuel his first-team ambitions this season.

Richman was sidelined with a groin injury before the start of the campaign when boss Micky Adams transfer-listed six players.

The 19-year-old survived the cull, unlike his former youth-teamers Danny Glover and Ross Davidson.

Richman, who has now recovered from his injury, made his first appearance of the season as a late substitute in Saturday's 4-0 home victory over Grimsby.

In the light of recent events, Richman is more determined than ever to make his presence felt.

Richman said: "I was injured and saw players – and some of my mates – get transfer-listed.

"Obviously I feared for my place, and still do, because you can't rest on your laurels. Nobody can do that and nobody is guaranteed a place in the team or squad.

"Whatever happens in the future happens, but for the present time I've just got to concentrate on fighting for that place in the team."

Last season the youngster scored five goals in 37 league appearances, including 20 starts.

He will hope to add to his appearance tally tomorrow when 10th-placed Vale travel to League Two rivals Aldershot (3pm).

However, Richman admits he can have no complaints about being left out of the side while Adams's team continue their encouraging start. Vale have only lost once in six matches, but Richman's challenge is to displace impressive midfield trio Tommy Fraser, Doug Loft and Louis Dodds.

Richman admitted: "It's a massive challenge for me.

"We've got Fraser, Lofty and Doddsy doing really well. It's going to be really difficult getting back into the team.

"But all I can do is work hard and try to fight my way back in there."

PLACES are available for Vale's annual golf day, at Newcastle Golf Club, on Monday, September 21.

Boss Micky Adams is participating in the event, with proceeds going to the club's centre of excellence and youth ranks.

The cost of entering a team of four is £200. For details, call Rob MacFarlane on 07973 293534.
