CHEADLE: A councillor has renewed his long-running battle for safety improvements at a notorious crossroads following another accident yesterday.

Richard Alcock, who represents the Cheadle South East ward on Staffordshire Moorlands District Council, has been campaigning to get flashing stop signs at Freehay crossroads.

Mr Alcock said: "Police and an ambulance were called out to another accident yesterday.

"Something has got to be done. I think a lot of the accidents involve tourists who do not know the area and fail to stop at the crossroads."

A Staffordshire County Council spokesman said: "This is a very difficult junction on which to locate high-profile information panels as space is very tight."

STOKE: Shoplifter Nathanial Pearcy has been jailed for 98 days by magistrates.

The 24-year-old, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to stealing ham and cheese from Tesco Express, Stoke, on May 17 this year.

He was also in breach of an 84-day suspended sentence, which was activated to run consecutively with a 14-day sentence imposed for the shoplifting charge.

There will be 25 beers and two ciders available from Friday to Sunday, with entertainment on the first two days.

All beers are £2 a pint. The Friday session is from 7pm to 11.30pm, Saturday is noon to 11.30pm and noon to 6pm on Sunday.

HERON CROSS: A man who admitted two offences of breaching a restraining order has been given a four-month prison sentence, suspended for 20 months, by magistrates.

David Wroblewski, aged 26, of Bourne Street, Heron Cross, was also ordered to do 120 hours unpaid work with 12 months' supervision and to pay £100 costs.

DRESDEN: A conditional discharge for 18 months was imposed by magistrates on Sean Broughton.

The 30-year-old, of Leveson Road, Dresden, pleaded guilty to stealing a crate of lager on May 6. He was ordered to pay £21 compensation and £70 costs. He also admitted failing to answer to his bail and was fined £50.
