“Excellant fotos, I was born in Hanley in the 40's,- worked there in the 60's, dont think Hanley
is any bigger now, lots of good shops gone, looking at the day time shots - not a lot of folk about as most were at work! youngsters at school, - say no more!”

“I was born in 1958 and was taken sometimes from Newcastle to Hanley with my mum and aunt. It was my first city centre if you like and I thought it was quite a good place. Today, Hanley is one of the poorest city centres there is by modern standards and it has probably the worst shop complex in the Potteries centre. It lacks culture and certain parts of it are distasteful even during day time. It needs a major overhaul. But to be fair down the road is one of the best business and retail parks in the country at Etruria. That of course may be the problem with the city centre and the two areas need joining up.”

“i worked in hanley at the time these photos were taken, and believe me, hanley was a much better place then i was 21 and hanley had everything hardly any closed down shops ,no charity shops no shopping centre a triving indoor and outdoor market and most of all it had its own identity,no seven days shopping infact thursday was half day closing and people still managed to get all their shopping done.
christmas in the town was magical and once again no late shopping .weve change but sadly not for the better”
