The Sentinel

IN REPLY to the story 'Wrights Pie cost me £35' (The Sentinel, February 14), may I suggest David Martin, of Mow Cop, and Mr Talbot, of Chell Green, go back to Tower Square in Tunstall with a camera and take photographs of the yellow no waiting lines.

You might then consult a solicitor and, along with the other 688 motorists caught over the last 18 months, demand your money back.

  1. ANGER: Father-of-three David Martin was hit with a £35 fine after leaving his car for just 57 seconds to buy a pie. Letter writer G Harding has urged Mr Martin to challenge the decision. Inset, our story from February 14.

If you have a computer, go on the internet and check out the Road Signs and Markings Regulations. These sites give the size, colour and position of all road signs and markings that are required for them to be legal.

Double yellow 'no waiting' lines must be clear, visible, with no breaks in the lines and with a stop bar across the end.

Those in Tower Square and many other areas are faded, difficult to see, riddled with breaks in the length of the lines and with no stop bar at the end of the lines.

These lines do not comply with the regulations and are therefore illegal and unenforceable – as are the parking fines issued.

Don't pay the fines. For those who have, demand your money back.

“With ref. to advise by G. Harding , you could land yourself in a lot more trouble and expense by taking his advise. Why don't people just park where they should park and not where they should NOT park.”

“Basically true, however employing a solicitor will only make the solicitor rich. If a case goes all the way to arbitration and you win you CAN'T claim any expenses so you'll be paying them out of your own pocket.”
