The average pregnancy lasts for roughly 40 weeks. A baby is considered premature when he or she is born before the 37th week, while those born before the 29th week are considered extremely premature.

In England alone, about 54,000 babies are born prematurely every year, which represents 8.3 per cent of the total number of births.

Bliss, the special care baby charity, provides vital support and care to premature and sick babies across the UK. It offers guidance and information, funds research and campaigns for babies to receive the best possible care. The charity has a free family support helpline on 0500 618140.
