Michael Jackson sales hits chart debut for The Cameleonz

NORTH Staffordshire pop hopefuls The Cameleonz have failed to reach the Top 40 with their debut single – after people started to buy Michael Jackson CDs.

Lis Lawrence and Marcus Birks released Should I Stay last Monday and were confident it would reach the Top 40.

They said it had entered the midweek chart at number 25 but it failed to hang on when the week's official list was published yesterday.

Marcus, from Leek, and Werrington-based Lis had hoped to put the Moorlands on the music map.

But Marcus said last night: "We are very disappointed but it was never going to stand a chance against the huge numbers of Michael Jackson records people are buying.

"The music business has been sent into turmoil and we know of artists who are holding back their releases.

"We released ours full of hope and without any clue what was to happen a few days later. Now we will be seen as a small band whose first single failed to chart."
