You've bin warned – stick to the speed limit in our road

FAMILIES are being urged to use speed limit stickers on their bins in a bid to slow down traffic.

The stickers, which remind motorists of the speed limit, have been issued to residents in an area in Cheadle.

PCSO Mark Bridgwood visited Froghall Road on Friday last week to give out the stickers.

Residents can now put the 30mph sticker on their outside bins.

PCSO Bridgwood was also on hand to talk to concerned residents about problems caused by speeding traffic.

He said: "Speeding is the major cause of road traffic accidents – and it is a real problem along Froghall Road.

"We have issued the stickers to act as a reminder for those who are exceeding the speed limit to slow down.

"If it's a 30mph zone then it is 30mph for a reason.

"Froghall Road is busy throughout most of the day and residents live along there.

"They have been extremely concerned about the motorists who travel above the speed limit."

Councillor Ian Whitehouse lives along Froghall Road and is secretary of Hammersley Hayes Action Group.

He said: "The residents' action group at Hammersley Hayes carried out a survey a few years ago, and the major concern was speeding vehicles along Froghall Road.

"I think it is the most dangerous road into Cheadle and something has to be done about it.

"I would welcome speed cameras along there because that would slow the cars down.

"The stickers are a step forward. Anything which may help is positive.

"We need to make people more aware of the speed and this could be another way of doing it."

Froghall Road is part of Cheadle's Community Speedwatch scheme which has helped to warn almost 100 motorists of their speed since the group was formed earlier this year.

Staffordshire county and deputy mayor of Cheadle Mike Maryon donated £1,000 towards the cost of the scheme from his Local Membership Initiative Scheme.

He said: "The Community Speedwatch scheme has been very effective so far, and hopefully the two groups can work together to combat the issue of speeding in Froghall Road.

"I'm pleased to see so many people care about their community to such an extent that they are willing to tackle the problem."

Froghall Road resident Janet Stubbs said the majority of motorists who travel down Froghall Road don't stick to the speed limit.

She added: "Speeding is a huge problem in this area. If they said they were going to put speed cameras up, I wouldn't oppose it.

"I think people who live here have had enough of it now – something has to be done."
