Lindsay Clowes, aged 49, a teacher from Newcastle, said: "It is a good idea. If it strengthens their ability to resource and support children with special needs then it has got to be a good thing.

"And if the staff are catered for and the transition can be made as painlessly as possible, then that will strengthen it even more."

Stuart Patrick, aged 44, an IT manager from Newcastle, said: "From what I have heard it all seems to be quite positive and the governors seem very enthusiastic about it and I think it will be a good move."
