THE daughter of one of the men whose name features on the village war memorial has welcomed the refurbishment.

Edward Connor, pictured, was a member of the Highlands Light Regiment in Scotland and saw service in France, Holland and Germany.

He died just weeks before the end of the Second World War when his daughter Maureen was three-years-old and his son Ted was just six-weeks-old.

He was shot by an enemy sniper while trying to help a wounded platoon sergeant and died without ever seeing his son.

Maureen Eyre, of Basford Bridge Lane, Cheddleton, said: "From a personal point of view, it is important to be able to have things to remember my father by.

"His name is listed on the roll of honour at Edinburgh Castle, and I travelled with my family to see it. I have all the memories of my father, but I think it is important to have somewhere to go to pay respects to those who died in the war."

Maureen also has a collection of mementoes which belonged to her father including his medals and papers. She said: "I have got the letters from when my father was killed and maps showing where the regiment was posted."

Before her mother Alice passed away, Maureen promised she would regularly visit the memorial to lay flowers.

She said: "I am glad there is something close enough for me to visit in the village.

"I have my memories and the collection, so I don't need reminding about it, but it is very nice people haven't just forgotten it all."
