STOKE-ON-TRENT is the least lonely place to live in the UK.

According to the University of Sheffield research, just 22.4 per cent of people in the city feel uninvolved in their community.

Edinburgh is the loneliest place to live.

A survey shows 33.1 per cent of people in the area are unlikely to be involved in their local community.

The Scottish capital has now overtaken London to become the loneliest of all the UK's cities.

Edinburgh's loneliness rating has risen 13 per cent since 1971, according to the study, called Changing Britain.

The loneliness rating is calculated by working out the number of non-married adults in an area and the number of one-person households.

The study was commissioned by the BBC.
