THE Spitfire designed by Reginald Mitchell is featured on a new set of stamps by Royal Mail.

The first-class stamps feature 10 images by famous British 20th century designers.

Mitchell, who was born in Butt Lane, designed the Spitfire which became a vital weapon in the Battle of Britain.

Other designs featured on the stamps include Mary Quant's mini-skirt, the London Underground map by Harry Beck and Sir Giles Gilbert Scott's red telephone kiosk.

The Design Classics series will be on sale for a year.

Speaking at the launch of the stamps in London, Julietta Edgar, of Royal Mail, said: "The starting point for us was the 50th anniversary of the Mini, and we decided to broaden it beyond the Mini to other design classics."
