Sainsbury's goes back to drawing board

A SUPERMARKET wants to change the layout of a petrol station set to be built alongside a new store.

Sainsbury's already has planning permission for the new store, petrol station, offices and houses off Liverpool Road, Newcastle.

The development will result in the relocation of Newcastle College and the closure of Sainsbury's existing Newcastle store.

Now Sainsbury's has gone back to planners with a new petrol station design which creates more landscaping between the site and residents on Ashfields New Road.

A report to councillors states: "The reorientation of the petrol station has allowed a more substantial part of the site, between the forecourt and the boundary with Ashfields New Road, to be given over to landscaping.

"This will provide a more substantial landscaped area between these houses and the site, thereby improving the appearance of the site for the occupiers of these properties."

The petrol station redesign will mean 13 fewer parking spaces at the store – a two per cent fall.

Members of Newcastle Borough Council's planning committee will discuss the application tomorrow.
