Review: McFly, Pop In The Park, Nantwich
MAKING fun of the venue's hometown name can put a band on a slippery slope. “I like it,” said baby-faced singer Tom. “It's like a nan with a twitch.”
However, the crowd loved him, the cheeky banter and everything else the foursome could thrash out.
The appearance of Harry's drum kit alone sparked a sudden outburst of screams from the crowd. So when the guys bounded on stage with their latest single One For The Radio, the fans let the rest of Nantwich know the show had started. This was despite the fact the emo-esque Go Audio had suitably warmed the audience up and left the stage 50 minutes earlier.
Support bands can get a lukewarm reception, but the three who played before the main act certainly bucked the trend.
Local band Sgt Wolfbanger brought its own growing legion of fans and, despite a short technical difficulty, set the tone for the rest of the evening. The second band, Cheshire-based Reemer, simply built on this.
With the release of the band's fourth studio album Radio:ACTIVE just two weeks ago, McFly managed to promote the new material, as well as giving the crowd the old favourites.
Seven songs in the set were from the recently released album and Dorfold Park responded by singing back the lyrics. These were mixed in with the popular Obviously, All About You and Star Girl, followed by the slower rock-ballad POV – one of a number of new songs showing a more mature sound. The encore, 5 Colours In Her Hair, got the biggest applause of the night. The frantic light show and guitar riffs put the fans in a frenzy before launching into their first number one hit, leaving the crowd wanting more. Unfortunately, apart from Dougie refusing to leave the stage and eventually being chased off by Danny, this was all we were left with – along with the promise that they would return.
