GOLDIE LOOKIN NO CHAIN: Stoke-on-Trent Lord Mayor Derek Capey was a victim of the 48-hour council strike.

Mr Capey had to attend civic engagements on Wednesday and Thursday without his gold chain of office – because it was locked away in a safe at a secret location.

He said: “The chain is kept in a secret safe and the strike has meant we have not been able to get hold of it.

“This is the first time in my knowledge that the Lord Mayor has not been able to wear the chain of office to official engagements.

“I would have preferred to go to the functions with the chain on but I wasn't prepared to cancel the visits and let people down.”

On Wednesday Mr Capey attended an awards ceremony at Brownhills Maths and Computing College in Tunstall, and on Thursday, he visited young offenders in Hanley.

Sue Wilson, deputy headteacher at Brownhills Maths and Computing College, said: “The Lord Mayor was standing on the stage next to Claire Toplass, president of Tunstall Rotary Club, who was wearing her official chain.

“Mr Capey made a light-hearted comment that his chain was more impressive than Claire's, but unfortunately he wasn't able to show it off because it was locked up in a safe.”

Mr Capey was due to be reunited with his chain yesterday.
