Families win mast battle

PLANNING officers have thrown out an application for a mobile phone mast.

Telecommunications company Vodafone applied to Stoke-on-Trent City Council for permission to erect the 12ft-tall (3.6 metre) mast on the corner of Sneyd Street and Hanley Road in Sneyd Green.

But a petition calling for the application to be refused was signed by 130 residents who were concerned about the possible effects of the mast on schoolchildren.

A council spokesman said: "The council decided that the location planned for the mast was unsuitable, as it was too close to both residential properties and a busy crossroads. It would also have been much taller than other surrounding lamp posts.

"It was also considered that the applicant had not done an adequate search of the surrounding area for an alternative site, particularly one further away from houses. For these reasons the application has been turned down."
