Extract from the journal

Mr Turton had a cough which caused us to have two very good sermons from Mr Sutcliffe. Charles made an epigram on the subject, which I must now put down:

Says Turton, "I have got a cough

Indeed I can't endure it.

My brethren, I must put you off.

To Buxton Baths, I must be off

And leave you all to cure it."

(Her sister's diary said: Mr Sutcliffe's second sermon on 'Take away thy folly from the Sabbath'. A subject which always shows one how defective we are in this duty. Fine and warm).

Editor's note: A feeling of guilt overcame Georgina that, on the Sabbath, only religious thoughts should dominate. It seems most unusual that Ellen should be so light-hearted on Sunday. Normally she reads theological works exclusively. Perhaps her brother's mocking of the vicar had raised her spirits.
