AT WAR: Youngsters travelled back in time when the Churnet Valley Railway staged the first of this year's extended programme of education days.

Pupils took part in an evacuee event yesterday to experience what it was like being an evacuee in the Second World War.

Veterans from the conflict were on hand to share their experiences with the youngsters.

The heritage railway employs two education officers who offer schools the opportunity to enhance classroom-based lessons linked to the national curriculum by engaging in either a living history day, a junior explorer day or a gifted and talented day.

Pictured are Berrisford First School pupils Leanne Tomkinson and Ellie Dodd, left, and Kayla Bond, right.
