NO NEW cases of meningitis have been reported at a Stoke-on-Trent nursery and holiday club since two youngsters were struck down with the brain disease.

Health experts were called into Meir Park Day Nursery, in Lysander Road, following the outbreak, to advise staff and parents to protect the rest of the children.

The children affected by the disease, who have not been named, are continuing to make good recoveries at their homes.

NHS Stoke-on-Trent has contacted the parents of all the 144 children who attend the nursery, urging them to go to the doctor's for antibiotics.

The private nursery remains open, after public health doctors advised that no other special precautions were needed.

An NHS Stoke-on-Trent spokesman said: "The operation was efficient and the nursery team should be praised for their professionalism, actions and dedication.

"The nursery is open for business as usual and advice and reassurance is available for any parent who may have any remaining questions."

The two children affected were hit with the commonest type of meningitis, Group B meningococcal.

Parents have been warned to be vigilant in watching for any early symptoms of meningitis.

These typically include a high temperature, severe headache, a negative reaction to bright lights, a stiff neck, aching joints, drowsiness and a purple rash which does not fade if pressed.
