Review: Opera Diva at Wolstanton Methodist Church
THERE'S a reason the sun shone at the weekend and it's because local singers Joy Sidley-Brooks, Jane Johnson and Philip Cartwright, together with pianist Richard Lythall, presented a refreshing and enjoyable concert at Wolstanton Methodist Church on Saturday night.
Supporting the Donna Louise Trust, the quartet, collectively known as Opera Diva, sang a selection of songs from opera and musical theatre and all I can say is for those of you thinking that opera is just for the elite, next time this vibrant quartet arrives in town be sure to buy yourself a ticket.
Fresh from the final of Stoke's Top Talent, soprano Joy Sidley-Brooks spoke openly about her passion for the charity and while there were many empty seats, those in the audience certainly felt they were enjoying something special.
Opening with Mozart's Alleluia, fellow soprano Jane Johnson got the evening off to a great start before arias from both Philip and Joy followed. Particularly impressive was Joy's controlled performance of Gounod's Ave Maria and Nessun Dorma, which she sung in the local talent show.
While opera filled the first half, it was musicals that dominated the second and with it came songs from Les Miserables and West Side Story, with Philip's beautiful presentation of Maria being one of the evening's highlights.
This concert was memorable for many reasons, but mostly because personalities and voices shone through for a great cause.
