Local talent is the big noise now - thanks to Sons Ltd

If you think Robbie Williams is the only performer to put Stoke-on-Trent on the music map then you need a little independent education from Sons Ltd, writes Lisa Stocks.

IN CASE you haven't heard, Stoke-on-Trent is sounding better and better these days. Sons Ltd, the Potteries own independent label, has helped to see to that.

Having already attracted support from the likes of Radio One's Steve Lamacq and Huw Stevens, Dirty Pretty Things' Carl Barat as well as Andy Rourke of the Smiths to name but a few, the independent label's fourth showcase takes place at Hanley's Victoria Hall on October 11, playing host to some of the industry's biggest names alongside its home-grown talent.

This event replaces the August 2 date, which was postponed due to a clash with Colin Murray's commitments and an opportunity to promote Sons in China.

Phill Jupitus, already a regular to the showcase, will be performing DJ sets along with Colin Murray, Alexa Chung and Chris Hawkins.

But it will be local groups This Is Seb Clarke, featuring Sons co-founder Seb Clarke, The La Dies, The Title, The Rough Charm and The Novellos, who are set to make the city proud.

Neil Graham, co-founder of Sons (which stands for the Soul of North Staffs Ltd) says the label has attracted phenomenal interest from industry heavyweights.

He says: "It's a testament to the bands and it's just a really exciting story. There are lots of really great bands coming out of one town at the same time, and they are on an independent label."

The label, based at Hillchurch Street, in Hanley, made its mark on the UK Independent chart in March, when four simultaneous released singles made it into the top five, including the top spot. More success is expected in October with the release of singles by The Title and The Rough Charm and albums from This is Seb Clarke and The Novellos.

The Sons Ltd showcase tickets cost £17.50 and are available from Music Mania on 01782 206000, at HMV in the Potteries Shopping Centre and at The Victoria Hall on 0870 0606649. All tickets for the postponed showcase dated August 2, will be valid.
