THE former Secretary of State for Health is due to give evidence today at the Stafford Hospital public inquiry.

The inquiry resumed yesterday after a summer break. And today the evidence of Andy Burnham MP, pictured, will be heard at Stafford Borough Council.

The independent inquiry, being conducted by Robert Francis QC, follows the publication of The Healthcare Commission report in 2009 which uncovered the scandal that between 400 and 1,200 patients died after suffering routine neglect over three years.

The report highlighted low staffing levels, inadequate nursing and a lack of equipment and leadership at the hospital, blaming chaotic systems for the deaths of hundreds of patients.
