COUNCILLOR Steve Povey has been named as a candidate in the General Election.

Mr Povey, who is a Leek town, Moorlands district and Staffordshire county councillor, will stand for UKIP in the Moorlands constituency, currently held by Labour's Charlotte Atkins.

Mr Povey, of Ashbourne Road, Leek, said: "It is time to stand up for the people of the Staffordshire Moorlands. I will fight the seat to have our voice heard in Westminster."

A UKIP spokesman said: "Steve has a proven and strong track record in the Staffordshire Moorlands.

"His results in general and local elections are the result of 27 years of consistent hard work on behalf of the people of the Moorlands.

"Since 1983 Steve has been instrumental in organising both large scale community events and the provision and running of community projects.

"Steve has been a Leek town councillor and a district councillor for the past seven years and served as Leek's mayor between 2006 and 2007."

Mr Povey, who runs an oatcake shop in Biddulph, faces competition from Ms Atkins, Conservative Karen Bradley and Liberal Democrat Henry Jebb.
