ELECTED mayor Mark Meredith has spoken for the first time about his decision to stay in his post following his arrest as part of a corruption investigation.

Mr Meredith, was arrested on March 6 on suspicion of misconduct in public office and complicity in corruption in public office.

Afterwards, he stepped down as chairman of the North Staffordshire Regeneration Partnership and Stoke-on-Trent City Council's decision-making executive and members board.

He also asked the Labour Party to suspend his membership and gave up the children and young people's services portfolio.

But Mr Meredith chose to keep his title as elected mayor, along with his £69,000 annual allowance.

Speaking at the launch of his sport and leisure Green Paper in Fenton on Saturday, he said his decision was in the city's best interests.

He said: "Politics can be very difficult at times, but you just have to get on with the job and that's what I have been doing for the last four years.

"I am trying to do what is right and I will continue to work with the councillors and officers to deliver good services for local people.

"I am still the elected mayor and I have not been charged with anything."
