Stoke on Trent has been voted the least lonely place to live in the UK.
Edinburgh is the loneliest place to live.
A survey shows 33.1 per cent of people in the area are unlikely to be involved in their local community.
The Scottish capital has now overtaken London to become the loneliest of all the UK's cities.
Edinburgh's loneliness rating has risen 13 per cent since 1971, according to the study, called Changing Britain.
The loneliness rating is calculated by working out the number of non-married adults in an area and the number of one-person households.
The study was commissioned by the BBC.

“On ground level theres not alot of money flying about in Stoke.
We have always been working class,so through not having alot people tend to get on with there life, because they have to survive, live and feed their children.
Through this comes the community spirit, we have to get on with things and help each other because were all in the same boat, lol.
But how do we class ourselves as lonely?
Socially im comfertable with my situation, but if your talking about a partner, well just lets say i think this Christmas is going to be another quiet one, lol.”

“It is good to see Stoke-on-trent getting some positive reviews from the University of Sheffield instead of some negative ones we have had in the past.. I moved to live here in 1983 from Nantwich and have always found the people of my"adopted" city to be very friendly and helpful. At first I was homesick because Nantwich is a great town to live in but alot of my family used to love coming to Stoke and visiting the lovely surrounding countryside. My uncle who lives in Crewe commented to me one day that potters are the salt of the earth and the friendliest people in the country!”

“I thought this was interesting until i read how they'd reached their conclusion- basiclally more married people and more living together than any where else. what a simplistic approach! i'm a happy single householder, I'm alone, but certainly not lonely!!”

“I think the Sentinel might have given better coverage of this good news story, not a mere 8 lines in 3 columns, with no picture, at the foot of the page. With Stoke-on-Trent widely regarded as the friendliest city, and once again, as in 1971 and 1991, the least lonely city, this survey points to the city's greatest assets - its residents and communities and their enduring fine qualities which will see them through thick and thin - together. Surely qualities to be celebrated whenever an opportunity arises, especially by this newspaper.”
