We will be left with huge debts
WE HAVE a Labour-controlled council in Stoke-on-Trent devoid of any business acumen or common sense.
The senior council officers are cocooned in an unreal world of financial waste, arrogance and reward for failure.
They plan to borrow £40m for new council offices, bring in revenue from a new business district and support a new shopping centre for Hanley.
In the real world £40m borrowed will cost at least £1m a year in interest for decades.

Why not leave the 20-year-old council offices where they are and offer 10-year reduced business rates to companies coming into the area?
Then appoint outside agencies with full powers to collect overdue taxes on a 'no collection no fee' basis.
Without some outside intervention to bring back sanity to this council the outlook is bleak.
Mistakes which are now being made will torture the city for decades to come.
The councilors and senior officers will all be long gone and the debts will still have to be paid. We are facing not just one white elephant but a whole herd.

“What gets me is that no-one has come forward from the Sh*tty Council to justify the expense and indeed the wisdom of moving the Council HQ back to Hanley. We have seen the folly of this kind of thinking at national level, where the concentration of commerce , industry, government and so on has made London a civic nightmare, growing like Topsy, crime-ridden and too expensive for ordinary people to afford to live in.
There used to be a policy of devolving government offices to the provinces, but that appears to have stopped. Certainly, North Staffs never prospered from the scheme.
Even the Olympics were aimed at the country's commercial centre. Again, Stoke, along with other towns and cities, gained little or nothing.
On a smaller scale, our Council is making a similar mistake, without anyone having the decency to explain why, or to take account of the wishes of the people who live here and who will be paying for it over the next 50 or so years.
My heart bleeds for the youngsters who will be picking up the tab.”
